Yankees/Indians – Pitching Notes

I missed yesterday’s game, but I watched a little bit on mlb.tv and Ian Kennedy’s command looked a little weird. I’m not overly concerned, since it’s Spring Training and he’s probably testing things out. Today’s game had weirder Spring Training quirks anyway.

Wang 4.1	6	4	4	2	7	1

Wang had 7 strikeouts, which is strange for Wang in any game never mind an abbreviated Spring Training outing. What was significant and good about his pretty solid performance is that he used his slider and changeup for outs and both pitches looked good. If this carries over into the regular season he will be in pretty good shape.

Patterson 1.2	0	0	0	0	1	0

Scott Patterson (part 2) is an odd story, as he is a 28 year old RHP who just spent most of 2007 in AA. The Yankees picked him up with a minor league deal. He has a bizarre, violent delivery that has worked effectively in Spring Training so far. Because Jeff Karstens has been doing his best to pitch himself out of a job, Patterson has a shot in the dark to make the team.

Rasner (W, 1-0)	3.0	5	2	2	1	2	1

Rasner was Rasner, not very overwhelming or impressive but sturdy enough. I don’t think he’s a good fit for middle relief, because his stuff isn’t very impressive. The team will probably keep him around for the year to make spot starts but I wouldn’t be surprised to see him traded to a team in need of a backend pitcher.
