Jackie Robinson Day at Shea Stadium

My boyfriend and I went to the Mets game last night because he had expressed an interested in seeing Shea Stadium this year before it is gone (I don’t understand either) and the tickets were $5 for Upper Reserve seating. They had a nice ceremony before the game, with Rachel Robinson speaking and unveiled the “Jackie Robinson Rotunda” that will be at CitiField.

I always think it’s a bit strange that the Mets so desperately want to tap into the Dodgers culture that left in 1958, they do it by saying they’re “New York’s National League” team, but don’t claim any connection with the Giants. If the team was in Brooklyn, I would understand, but they’re in Queens and it’s a very different area from where Ebbets Field stood.

They claim that attendance was about 46,000 for the game, but Shea was rather empty. Just another reason why you should always take attendance numbers with a grain of salt.

CitiField looks great from the outside, effectively making Shea even more dumpy.

Hello ladies, want some free baseball tickets?

LaTroy Hawkins has given in to the crazies who want Paul O’Neill’s number retired and vociferously boo and curse anyone who might dare think of wearing the hallowed #21. Be proud of yourselves, classy insane Paul O’Neill fans!

Unintentionally hilarious quote of the day:

Carl’s a 1-2 starter,” O’Connell said. “Those guys don’t grow on trees. Those guys are very rare, 200-inning guys are very rare in this game, and they’re the ones that make the money. And he did it two years in a row, before he got hurt, and I’m sure he’s going to do it again.”
