Oh No, Not Roid Rage!!

After Roger Clemens beaned Mike Piazza during interleague play in 2000, Joe Torre loyally stood by him. And when Clemens stoked the feud’s flames in Game 2 of the World Series that year by flinging part of a broken bat in Piazza’s direction, Torre refused to chastise him publicly.

But with Torre’s new book raising the issue of steroids in the clubhouse during his 12 years as the manager of the Yankees, he no longer seems so eager to rush to Clemens’s defense. During a radio interview Tuesday afternoon on WFAN, Torre was asked whether he believed that Clemens’s bat toss was an instance of “roid rage.”

“I didn’t necessarily tie the two together,” Torre said. “But in retrospect with everything that’s going on, it could very well have been.”

If this is what roid rage does I would like to see more of it in baseball. Still one of the greatest moments in World Series history.
