The Andy Pettitte Sock Report
Andy Pettitte was wearing high socks tonight. This season he started off wearing long pants, then switched to high socks, then during his last start he was wearing long pants again.
I think Andy looks way better in high socks than he does in long pants, and I really care about this because he is–hands down–my favorite baseball player. and I am crazy (for Andy Pettitte).
He pitched well tonight–don’t let those four runs fool you. He had a very good pitchcount, got himself out of trouble, didn’t fall apart and didn’t walk anyone. the inpark homerun the pirates got was courtsey of Melky being way out of position and playing a ball very badly.
I don’t know much about the Pirates (National League baseball is dead to me) and was impressed by their field staff. Their pitcher Tom Gorzelanny is also very good, though my understanding is that the rest of their rotation isn’t. I heard that the Mets want Xavier Nady back and I don’t blame them.
The Yankees came back from being two runs behind in the 7th, and I was sad that they were unable to wrap things up because it would have saved me almost dying. From what I saw of him, Dámaso Martei is an excellent reliever and did a good job keeping the Yankees from going ahead.
Going to a game that gets won in the bottom of the ninth or extra innings is both a good and a bad thing. On the good side, you get to see an excellent really compelling game. On the bad side, it almost kills you. And so, after the Pirates intentionally walked Damon in the 10th hoping to pull a double play (the Yankees had one out) and Derek came up to bat I was sure I was going to have a heartattack.
I really should have known better than to worry, because Derek went ahead and showed everyone why it was “Derek Jeter Stauette Night” (and yes, I did get one). He brought Robbie Cano in, and won the game. The entire stadium erupted in one giant “wooo!!” and everyone started hugging each other and giving each other high fives. It reminded me of when the yankees were really good and could create a miracle like this as though it were a routine play.
I of course called up Peet screaming “WOOOO!!” and then realized I couldn’t hear him because of all the yelling in the stadium, whoops.
The best part of the night, however, was the walk home from the train station. I guess a lot of people were watching because folks asked to see my statuette (I showed them, because I am nice), and rejoiced about the “good game”. This is why I love my neighborhood.
