The Yankees had a two run lead going into the top of the 9th inning tonight, meaning it was Mariano Rivera time. Mariano is, as pretty much everyone who has watched baseball in the last several years knows, a very special player and it is a pretty big deal to most people at Yankee Stadium to watch him close out another game. There are probably a good number of people in attendance who’ve never seen it in person before and may never see it again, and it is one of the best things you can see at Yankee Stadium. Me, I’ve seen it a billion times but it is one of those things that never loses its luster.

So imagine my surprise when the count to Jose Lopez hit 1-2 and some girl a few rows down yelled out “I’m going to start the wave!”

If you are over the age of 8 or so you should never do the wave at a close Major League baseball game. If you are accompanying someone of the proper age to do the wave, you should probably encourage them not to and teach them proper ballpark etiquette. I suggest taking them to a minor league game where anything goes for things like the wave and tossing beach balls around. Basically, if you are not a small child do not do the wave.

Seriously, don’t do it. It’s rude and interferes with people who are actually at the baseball game to watch the baseball game. Yes we actually exist, I know it’s amazing. I’ll give you that there are certain times when it’s not a crime against humanity to do the wave (you can read about all that over here if you’re confused and need guidance), but I promise you that Mariano Rivera closing out a game at Yankee Stadium is never one of those times.

And so, if you try to do the wave and block my view when Mariano is pitching, especially on a two strike count, don’t act surprised/offended/upset when I yell at you to cease blocking my view. Because I am watching the game. Funny how that works.

Shawn Chacon attempts to kill Ed Wade, which as far as most people (including me) are concerned makes him a True American Hero and is immediately cut. Manny Ramirez shoves the Boston travel secretary to the ground because he tells him he might not be able to get him 16 tickets for a game and he isn’t disciplined at all as far as anyone can tell. I don’t expect Manny to get cut from the Red Sox, but surely you’d think there would be some sort of repercussion made public. Of course now that everyone is whining, maybe he’ll get fined a puny amount.

Ramirez had requested 16 tickets from Jack McCormick for Saturday’s game against the Astros, the report said.

After McCormick said that might not be possible, Ramirez replied by yelling, “Just do your job,” according to Monday’s report.

Ramirez and McCormick later discussed the incident in a private meeting, during which the left fielder made amends.

“That’s over,” Ramirez said Sunday, according to the report. “We’re fine now.”

Boston manager Terry Francona said the team had resolved the matter and was “satisfied with how we handled this.”

“Sometimes things happen,” Francona said, according to The Journal. “And when they do, we choose to handle them internally.”

Said McCormick: “It was an unfortunate misunderstanding and it’s over with as far as I’m concerned.”

See, it’s ok! He apologized!

There were about 400 fans on hand when the game started Wednesday afternoon and the announced attendance was 10,121. The Marlins have the smallest total attendance in the majors.

That’s not very many people at all!

You would think they would not kick anyone out given the circumstances, but the Washington Post reports differently:

There were so few fans at Dolphin Stadium for Wednesday’s game, a season ticket holder got thrown out for heckling the umpire too loudly.

In the fifth inning of the Florida Marlins’ 5-4 victory over the Washington Nationals, home plate umpire Paul Schreiber gave the thumb to an unnamed man seated behind the plate who had been verbally abusive throughout the contest.

“The fan was chirping at the umpire,” Nationals catcher Brian Schneider said. “There was no need for it.”

The man was so loud, and the atmosphere so quiet, the fan could be heard saying “you don’t make more than me” on the television broadcast as he was forced to leave. There were no more than about 400 fans in attendance at the game’s peak.

I would probably be really loud and angry too if I were a Marlins season ticket holder.

It’s worth noting that in both 2003 and 2004 the Marlins had horrid attendance. Time for them to go byebye, I think.
