Matsui Trade Rumors, Ridiculous or Incredibly Ridiculous?
While these are not as terrible or horrible as other rumors flying around, Pete Abe’s note that the Yankees were talking to the Giants about a Matsui trade is pretty sickening. Not because Matsui is any great shakes, but because Noah Lowry is not really any good (even if pushed I doubt even Brian Sabean would give up Matt Cain or Tim Linecum for Matsui) and the Giants have a terrible bullpen the Yankees can’t get anything particularly interesting from. And also because this means that the team would be relying on Jason Giambi to be decent/not get hurt all season which is not something I have much faith in.
Beyond Matsui’s value as a player and any emotional attachment I have to him, Matsui also brings the Yankees a lot of coverage and money from Japan that I think it would be foolish to give up. Of course that is also the exact reason why the Giants (maybe) want him. Beyond that whole problem they have scoring runs, with the departure of Barry Bonds they are looking to put people in the seats.
In the end, though, I think Cashman is too smart to make this trade unless a player who is considerably better than Noah Lowry is involved (say that Matt Cain guy mentioned earlier).
Season Total: .269/.307/.410
