These seats are okay even though you can’t really see the left fielder (which I have considered to be an advantage for my sanity this year) because there is a perfect view of the bullpens that I absolutely love.

Of course, it wasn’t rained out until they made everyone sit around for a very long time. They had to have known the game was going to be canceled long before that as the weather forecast said there would be rain all night but it’s to be expected that the team tries to squeeze out as much concession money as possible. They did the same thing on Opening Day. It works, of course, because if the game is somehow not postponed you don’t get your money back. I mean, it’s why I stay every time. Had the game tomorrow been at 4 instead of 1 I think they would have made people wait longer or done something terrible like started it at 10.

What a great park, it’s really amazing that the Pirates have what is seriously the nicest ballpark around. I guess it’s an attempt to pull in fans even though the team isn’t any good (yet), but the prices aren’t cheap enough to make it really worth it to non-masochists. It’s also full of insane ushers who were yelling at people who tried to move one measly section over (not us, I am too lazy to move once I am in my seat) in a ballpark that was 75% empty.

It's good this was here, I almost forgot what team I was there to see. The scoreboard at PNC complete with blinding lights. Bullpens are a land of excitement and joy. The view from Section 316--nice! I took a lot of pictures, here are a few with links to more.

Futures Game

The US Squad was a bit nerfed because it was being used as a tryout for the US Olympic team, but there was still a lot of talent around. Fernando Martinez, Jesus Montero, Matt LaPorta, Trevor Cahill, Mat Gamel, and a few other characters of interest were there. Attendance wasn’t very high, but that is probably because Major League Baseball was charging ridiculous prices for an event with limited interest.

Home Run Derby and NL Batting Practice

The Home Run Derby is something I have always found to be pretty boring on TV, but in person it was very fun. Some of that was probably helped by Josh Hamilton’s amazing first round. I got the feeling he stopped hitting balls almost out of the stadium because he got bored, and also did not want to tax his 71 year old pitcher too hard.
